Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a first-person action RPG set in the historical realities of medieval Central Europe. The independent Czech studio Warhorse was responsible for the development of the game, and its members included authors of the popular games such as Mafia, Original War and UFO trilogy published in 2003-2007.

While working on their debut title, developers drew inspiration from a number of cult RPG titles. In terms of mechanics and open world, their game is somewhat reminiscent of titles such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or the Mount & Blade series.

The Dark Souls series became a model for a difficult and extremely demanding combat system. The way the plot is conducted may evoke associations with The Witcher. Kingdom Come: Deliverance was officially announced in December 2013 as an extremely extensive production, divided into three large episodes, but ultimately it was decided to release it as one whole.

Plot

The game's plot is set in Central Europe at the beginning of the 15th century. The actual game begins in 1403, a dozen or so years before the bloody Hussite wars, which shocked not only the Czech Republic, but also the German and Polish Kingdoms, ruled at that time by Wladyslaw Jagiello.

In Kingdom Come: Deliverance we play the role of the blacksmith's son, a young man named Henry. When one day his village is razed to the ground by enemy armies, the protagonist vows to fulfill his father's last will and take revenge on the perpetrators of the attack. Driven by the desire for revenge, Henry quickly becomes involved in larger politics.

Map

Gameplay in Kingdom Come: Deliverance takes place in the vast open world of medieval Central Europe. The area created for the game is alive and authentic. Individual locations are characterized by a different architectural style, which is the result of the clash of influences of different cultures. The NPCs inhabiting them are equipped with advanced artificial intelligence algorithms that determine their daily lifestyle, e.g. through work or favorite ways of spending free time.

Gameplay

The mechanics of the game do not differ significantly from most modern action RPGs. We observe the events from the first-person perspective. We have to fight, talk to non-player characters, develop skills, practice crafts and take care of our equipment, as well as perform various main and side quests with considerable freedom of choice and non-linear development of the plot. During the gam, our hero is also joined by various companions, for some time supporting him with their skills in combat and completing missions.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance was set in historical realities. During the game we do not encounter any monsters or magical items, and what stands out is a faithful representation of the era, which is also reflected in the hero development system. The game lacks a typical class system, and our protagonist - described by four basic factors (strength, dexterity, vitality, rhetoric) - can develop in various directions. For example we can become a skilled warrior, bard or thief. Henry improves his skills by performing related activities, and can additionally speed up this process by reading appropriate books or paying for lessons from teachers.

Combat plays an important role in the game, and it is far from a typical arcade model. The creators carefully recreated the rules of medieval fencing, which resulted in realistic and extremely demanding mechanics, with the possibility of striking different parts of the body, blocking, parrying or knocking down enemy weapons. It is also worth noting that our protagonist takes part not only in individual duels, but also in epic sieges, where we face clashes with many characters.

Also noteworthy is the extremely extensive inventory system. The hero puts on as many as sixteen different elements of armor or clothing, which are also arranged in layers, giving us a total of countless combinations. Many items, including various remedies, can be obtained thanks to a crafting system implemented in the form of mini-games.

Game modes

The game focuses entirely on a singleplayer story, so it does not feature any form of multiplayer or coop.

Engine

Kingdom Come: Deliverance uses the advanced CryEngine 3 graphics engine, known primarily from the Crysis series. Despite a relatively low budget, Czech developers managed to create high-quality visuals.
